College coaches have always looked beyond their own backyard. What's changed is how far, and how early.
More programs are building rosters with players from overseas. For a U.S. club family, that means the competition for a spot got bigger, and a lot of it happens where you can't see it.
Here's what's actually going on, and what your athlete can do about it.
Why coaches are recruiting globally
The pitch is simple for a coach. One scholarship can land a player who's been training in a national program since middle school.
International players often arrive older, more physical, and used to a faster game. That's appealing when a coach has one open spot and wants it filled by someone who can contribute in year one.
Add the transfer portal, and rosters churn faster than they used to. Coaches fill gaps wherever the best available player is, and sometimes that player is in Europe or South America, not the club two towns over.
What it means for your athlete
The pool got deeper, so the margins got thinner. A player who'd have been a clear fit five years ago now shares the coach's attention with prospects from three continents.
That's not a reason to panic. It's a reason to get sharper about the things you control.
- Start the conversation earlier. Coaches are identifying talent sooner, so a late start costs more than it used to.
- Show the intangibles on film. Coaches recruiting globally still want players who read the game, communicate, and compete. Put that on tape, not just your best swings.
- Be honest about fit. If a top program is stacked with international transfers at your position, a program one level down might give your athlete the court time that actually builds a career.
The gap is information, not talent
Families who understand how this works are having different conversations. They know when coaches recruit, what they're weighing, and where their athlete realistically fits.
The families who don't find out late, usually after a spot they wanted is already gone.
That gap is the whole reason Set Point exists. We pull recruiting intelligence from public sources into one place, so your family can move on the same timeline the informed ones do. That's what we built it for.
